Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has expressed approval for the recent advancement of the Speedy Trial Act through both the House and Senate Judiciary Committees. This legislation aims to expedite trials for violent criminal cases, reduce court backlogs, and ensure timely justice for victims. The measure is sponsored by Senate Judiciary Chairman Will Barfoot and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Hill.
Attorney General Marshall stated, “The overwhelming support for this legislation demonstrates Alabama’s commitment to prioritizing public safety and addressing the backlog of violent crime cases.” He emphasized that prolonged trial delays increase the risk of reoffending among violent criminals and complicate the delivery of justice. According to Marshall, ensuring accountability without unnecessary delays will bring justice, fairness, and efficiency to Alabama's courts.
Current Alabama law permits the state Supreme Court to appoint special judges. However, Senate Bill 178 and House Bill 307 introduce a mechanism allowing prosecutors to request additional judicial resources as a cost-effective solution to manage case backlogs. These bills also propose establishing a Speedy Trial Fund dedicated to supporting special judges, court reporters, and additional juries.
Marshall further commented on the committees' actions: “The committees’ quick action and support reaffirm what I’ve been saying for months—Alabamians have no tolerance for violent crime.” He acknowledged Chairmen Barfoot's and Hill's leadership in advancing this critical legislation and anticipates its swift passage in both legislative chambers.
