Three men from Newport News have received life sentences following their convictions for a series of violent crimes, including five murders and multiple robberies. The federal jury found Ronzel Monte Dixie, Kwaimain Shy’de Redmon, and Meko Montez Brown Jr. guilty of participating in a crime spree between January and November 2017.

Court records indicate that the trio was involved in at least seven shootings, five of which were fatal. Their criminal activities also included four commercial robberies, three drug-related thefts, car thefts, and high-speed police chases. The men used various firearms during these crimes.

On October 1, 2017, Dixie and Redmon robbed a drug dealer's apartment with another accomplice, stealing drugs, money, and a Lexus sedan. Subsequently, on October 12, they committed another robbery to gather bail money for Redmon after his arrest.

A few days later on October 16, Dixie shot a man leaving Hoss’s Deli in Newport News. Later that day at Happy Shopper convenience store in Hampton, the group killed an employee during a robbery.

Further incidents occurred on November 7 when Dixie and Brown committed two more robberies using stolen firearms. On November 8, they killed one man and wounded a correctional officer during an attempted robbery.

Their crime spree continued with additional robberies in Chesapeake on November 9 and Newport News on November 11. Throughout these events, they brandished firearms to intimidate victims.

Dixie faced numerous charges including conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce by robbery and use of a firearm resulting in death. He received five consecutive life sentences plus an additional 30 years. Redmon was sentenced to life plus 57 years for similar charges while Brown received life plus 54 years for his role in the crimes.

The sentencing announcement was made by Erik S. Siebert from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia alongside Michael Feinberg from the FBI’s Norfolk Field Office. They acknowledged the investigative efforts of local police departments in Newport News and Hampton.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lisa R. McKeel and Mack Coleman along with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Howard J. Zlotnick prosecuted the case against the three men.
