A Fairbanks resident, Kevin Shank, has been sentenced to over 14 years in prison for possessing and intending to distribute more than 12 kilograms of illegal drugs. The sentencing took place after law enforcement gathered evidence of Shank's activities starting in August 2023.

Court documents revealed that authorities observed a transaction at Shank's residence in February 2024, where an individual purchased heroin and fentanyl pills. A search warrant executed on March 19, 2024, led to the discovery of substantial quantities of various controlled substances including methamphetamine, fentanyl tablets and powder, cocaine, marijuana, heroin, suboxone, and Xanax. Additionally, firearms and ammunition were found along with over $303,000 in cash and a truck linked to drug trafficking proceeds.

Most of the drugs were hidden in a secret compartment within a side room at Shank's residence. Firearms were strategically placed at entrances to the property.

On November 26, 2024, Shank pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute. His sentence includes five years of supervised release and a $25,000 fine.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn R. Vogel stated: “Mr. Shank possessed roughly 22 pounds of controlled substances... This case marks the largest drug seizure in Fairbanks history... This sentence underscores our strong commitment to dismantling drug trafficking supplies.”

David F. Reames from the DEA Seattle Field Division emphasized: “Drug traffickers like Mr. Shank... pose an especially grave threat... The fentanyl alone seized in this case amounted to more than 85,000 potentially lethal doses.”

The investigation was conducted by multiple agencies including the DEA Seattle Field Division and Fairbanks Resident Office with assistance from several local police departments as part of the Fairbanks Area Narcotics Team (FANT). Assistant U.S. Attorney Carly Vosacek prosecuted the case.
