The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has initiated an inquiry into the death of a civilian following an encounter with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) in Queens. The incident occurred on February 18, 2025.

According to reports, a man approached the 111th Precinct while allegedly carrying a firearm. Officers at the scene instructed him multiple times to drop the weapon, but he did not comply. In response, four officers discharged their service weapons, hitting the man. He was then taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. A firearm was recovered from the scene.

Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI reviews all incidents reported where a police officer or peace officer may have caused a person's death through action or inaction. This applies whether the officer is on-duty or off-duty and regardless of whether the deceased was armed or unarmed, in custody, or incarcerated. If OSI determines that an officer may have been responsible for causing the death, it conducts a full investigation.

These details are preliminary and may be subject to change.
