The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Rhode Island has reported collections totaling nearly $10 million from civil and criminal actions during Fiscal Year 2024. Acting U.S. Attorney Sara Miron Bloom stated that the office collected $9,912,376.35 in total, with $774,398.92 obtained through criminal actions and $9,137,977 from civil actions.
Furthermore, collaboration with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Department of Justice components resulted in an additional collection of $19,261,980.72 in jointly pursued cases. From this sum, $2,460.50 was attributed to criminal actions while a significant portion of $19,259,520.22 came from civil actions.
The role of U.S. Attorneys’ Offices extends to enforcing and collecting debts owed both to the government and federal crime victims as per legal obligations requiring restitution for victims suffering physical or financial harm due to federal crimes. Although restitution directly benefits victims, fines and felony assessments contribute to the Crime Victims Fund supporting victim compensation programs at federal and state levels.
In addition to these efforts, the Rhode Island office secured $1,129,404 through asset forfeiture actions within FY 2024. Assets forfeited are deposited into the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund aimed at compensating crime victims and supporting law enforcement activities.
