A Mexican national, Maico Miguel Perez, has been indicted for illegal reentry into the United States after previously being deported. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg in Jacksonville, Florida. If found guilty, Perez could face up to two years in federal prison.

Court documents reveal that Perez is a citizen and national of Mexico who was removed from the United States on November 23, 2022. He returned voluntarily and was discovered on September 2, 2024, when he was arrested in Duval County due to a local warrant. Perez had not obtained consent from either the Attorney General or the Secretary of Homeland Security to apply for readmission to the U.S.

The indictment serves as a formal charge but does not imply guilt. "Every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty," states the release.

The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement Removal Operations (ERO). Assistant United States Attorney Kelli Swaney will prosecute the case.
