A Laredo man has been sentenced to federal prison for possessing firearms and ammunition, including one weapon hidden under his son's mattress. U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced the sentencing of 34-year-old Miguel Angel Ferreyro Jr., who had previously pleaded guilty on June 20, 2024.

Ferreyro was already convicted in 2022 for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute over 100 kilograms of marijuana, which prohibited him from possessing weapons or ammunition under federal law. At the time of his arrest, he was still serving a term of supervised release.

U.S. District Judge John A. Kazen sentenced Ferreyro to 37 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. The court criticized Ferreyro's actions, stating that leaving firearms in a child's bedroom was "crazy" and "insane," and noted the situation was "fraught with the risk of danger."

Authorities discovered the firearms at Ferreyro’s residence on February 14, 2024, after receiving information about a hidden gun. They recovered three firearms, approximately 184 rounds of ammunition, three high-capacity rifle magazines, and one rifle scope. One firearm was found under his 12-year-old son's mattress while other items were located in the minor's closet.

A forensic examination revealed that Ferreyro instructed another minor child to hide two firearms, one of which was loaded.

Ferreyro remains in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility yet to be determined.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with assistance from Border Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bryan Oliver and Ann Booth prosecuted the case.
