A felon linked to a shooting incident in Elizabeth City has been sentenced to 115 months in prison for possessing ammunition unlawfully. Jermel Trevon Williams, aged 30, pleaded guilty on November 22, 2024.
The court heard that on August 7, 2023, Elizabeth City Police Department officers responded to a shooting near a downtown bar. Surveillance footage revealed two individuals discharging firearms, including Williams. Officers collected five 9mm shell casings and two .45 caliber shell casings from the scene.
Later, on October 29, 2023, Raleigh Police Department officers stopped a vehicle due to a window tint violation with Williams as a passenger. They discovered marijuana roaches in plain view and conducted a search. The search led to finding a digital scale in the center console and under the front passenger seat—where Williams was sitting—a stolen 9mm handgun and two baggies of marijuana were found. Williams admitted ownership of these items.
Williams' conviction is part of the Violent Crime Action Plan (VCAP), which collaborates local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies with communities to tackle major violent crime drivers through strategic enforcement and intelligence-led policing.
Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina Daniel Bubar announced the sentencing by U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with ECPD and RPD investigated the case; Assistant U.S. Attorney John Newby prosecuted it.
