In Honolulu, Acting U.S. Attorney Kenneth M. Sorenson announced that the District of Hawaii collected a total of $1,742,014.13 in criminal and civil actions during Fiscal Year 2024. Of this sum, $1,220,860.27 came from criminal actions while $521,153.86 was gathered from civil actions.

Furthermore, through collaboration with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Department of Justice components, an additional $51,191.45 was collected in joint civil actions.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office is dedicated to protecting the public and recovering funds for the victims of federal crime,” stated Acting U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson. “Our hard-working Assistant U.S. Attorneys and financial litigation and support staffs make sure that criminals are prosecuted, convicted and that the proceeds of their crimes, along with any and all fines, are collected and repurposed to positive use."

The responsibilities of the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices include enforcing and collecting civil debts owed to the United States as well as criminal debts owed to federal crime victims. Defendants are required by law to pay restitution to victims who have suffered physical injury or financial loss due to certain federal crimes.

Additionally, in FY 2024, the District of Hawaii's U.S. Attorney’s office worked alongside partner agencies to collect $4,123,459 through asset forfeiture actions. The assets deposited into the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund are used for victim compensation and various law enforcement purposes.

Sorenson emphasized pride in partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies aimed at compensating victims and ensuring criminals face financial accountability.
