Attorney General Kwame Raoul has issued a warning to Illinois residents considering placing bets on the upcoming Super Bowl. He advises consumers to be cautious and informed about the risks associated with online and app-based sports betting.

Illinois permits certain sports betting platforms to operate within the state, but these operators must be licensed by the Illinois Gaming Board and adhere to regulations. Consumers can verify if a sportsbook is authorized in Illinois by checking the Illinois Gaming Board’s licensee list.

“If you decide to bet on the Super Bowl or any other sporting event, take the time to determine that you are placing your bet with an entity that is licensed by the Illinois Gaming Board and operating legally in the state,” Raoul stated. “Using an unlicensed betting service puts your personal information and your money at risk. Even if a sports betting website or app is licensed, it’s also important to read the details of any promotional offers to make sure there are no hidden costs or obligations.”

Raoul highlighted that while a license is required for legal operation in Illinois, numerous unlicensed operators continue to offer services unlawfully. Many such operators are based outside of the United States, limiting consumer recourse should issues arise, such as difficulties withdrawing funds. Recently, cease and desist letters were sent by the Gaming Board to alleged unlicensed sites Bovada.com and PrizePicks.

The Attorney General urged consumers interested in wagering on sporting events like the Super Bowl to proceed carefully. For those choosing licensed apps or websites, understanding terms related to “risk-free bets” or promotional offers is crucial as they often involve conditions where refunds are given as site credit.

Raoul provided several tips for bettors:

- Verify that the operator holds a valid Illinois license using the Illinois Gaming Board’s list.

- Conduct thorough research through sources like the Better Business Bureau or gambling forums.

- Be cautious of unsolicited messages promoting gambling; they may be scams.

- Ensure website authenticity to avoid fake sites.

- Be skeptical of bonuses that seem too generous.

- Carefully read promotional offer terms for hidden obligations.

Acknowledging gambling's inherent risks, Raoul pointed out its potential impact on addiction among residents from diverse backgrounds. Those affected can reach out for help via resources such as 1-800-GAMBLER or text “ILGAMB” to 833234. Additionally, individuals can register with the Self-Exclusion Program offered by the Illinois Gaming Board.

If fraud is suspected, Raoul encourages filing complaints through his office’s website or contacting one of their Consumer Fraud Hotlines:
