Burlington, Vermont – The United States Attorney's Office announced that Antonio Bayarri-Barrera, a 35-year-old Spanish citizen, pleaded guilty to illegally entering the United States. This charge stems from an incident where Bayarri-Barrera crossed the border at a location not designated by immigration authorities.
Court documents reveal that on January 31, 2025, around 2:52 a.m., U.S. Border Patrol agents were alerted to an individual walking south towards the U.S.-Canada border near the Haskell Free Library in Derby Line, Vermont. A Border Patrol Agent soon intercepted Bayarri-Barrera after he crossed into the United States and conducted an immigration inspection. Bayarri-Barrera confirmed his Spanish citizenship and admitted to crossing the border near the library.
Bayarri-Barrera appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle on February 3, 2025, where he pleaded guilty and received a time-served sentence. He faced a potential sentence of up to six months' imprisonment.
Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the efforts of the United States Border Patrol in this case.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew C. Gilman, with Bayarri-Barrera represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Emily Kenyon.
