Devan Green, a 30-year-old resident of Washington DC, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the stabbing of his girlfriend. The incident occurred on September 19, 2023, in their shared apartment. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin, Jr., and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department.

Green was found guilty on November 14, 2024, by a Superior Court jury. He faced charges including assault with intent to kill while armed, assault with a dangerous weapon, aggravated assault while armed, and assault with significant bodily injury while armed. The trial lasted for 13 days. Judge Rainey Brandt issued the sentence and additionally ordered Green to avoid any contact with the victim or her son.

Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Green held his girlfriend and her child against their will for over forty minutes as family members repeatedly called emergency services. During this time, Green placed the child in a back bedroom and stabbed his girlfriend once in the chest. When she attempted to check on her son, he inflicted an additional 20 stab wounds before fleeing the scene. He was apprehended one month later.

U.S. Attorney Martin and Chief Smith acknowledged the efforts of those involved in investigating the case from the Metropolitan Police Department. They also praised Assistant U.S. Attorneys Molly K. Smith and Katharine E. Yaske from the Domestic Violence Section for prosecuting the case effectively.
