California Attorney General Rob Bonta expressed support for Governor Gavin Newsom's latest executive order aimed at providing protections for victims of the recent wildfires in Los Angeles. The executive order, identified as N-17-25, introduces several measures to assist affected residents.
The order expands existing rental price gouging protections to include leases of any length. Additionally, it prohibits unsolicited property offers from predatory buyers in three newly designated ZIP codes: 91024, 91103, and 91367. Another significant provision exempts housing in high fair market value areas that have not previously been on the rental market from statutory rent caps.
Attorney General Bonta stated, “Governor Newsom’s executive order will make an important difference in the lives of Californians who have been affected by the wildfires.” He emphasized the significance of applying price gouging protections to all lease lengths and highlighted the prohibition of predatory real estate practices in specified areas. The suspension of rent caps is expected to bring additional housing options to the market.
Bonta further affirmed his office's dedication to collaborating with local, state, and federal partners in safeguarding communities impacted by these natural disasters.
