A Mission, South Dakota man has been sentenced to federal prison for larceny. U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte handed down the sentence on February 3, 2025.

Preston White Feather, aged 28, received a one-year federal prison term followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and restitution amounting to $1,888.56.

White Feather was indicted by a federal grand jury in January 2024 and pleaded guilty on October 31, 2024. The conviction relates to an incident from December 2023 within the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation's boundaries. On December 9, 2023, White Feather stole merchandise from a convenience store in Mission, South Dakota. Surveillance video identified him as the suspect leading to his arrest by law enforcement.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted this case under the Major Crimes Act—a federal statute requiring certain violent crimes in Indian Country to be tried in Federal court instead of State court.

The investigation was conducted by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services with Senior Litigation Counsel Kirk Albertson handling prosecution duties.

Following sentencing, White Feather was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
