California Attorney General Rob Bonta has addressed President Trump's recent executive order, which targets transgender, nonbinary, intersex, and gender nonconforming students. In his statement, Bonta emphasized that California will maintain its commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all students.

"California will continue to create a welcoming environment for all students, including transgender and gender nonconforming students," said Bonta. He highlighted that while the federal government sets basic civil rights protections, California law offers additional safeguards beyond those at the federal level.

Bonta noted that both the U.S. Constitution and California's Constitution guarantee equality in education and equal protection under the law. He criticized the President's order for attempting to undermine these rights by threatening educators who provide equal educational opportunities.

"Discrimination has no place in the classroom," he stated. Bonta asserted that school curriculum decisions are made at state and local levels, not by the federal government. He reiterated California's legal requirements for K-12 schools to offer inclusive curricula reflecting diverse contributions from various groups.

"As Attorney General, I am committed to standing up for the rights of all California students," Bonta affirmed. He expressed support for educators working towards safe and inclusive environments.

Bonta condemned the President's use of power to instill fear among vulnerable groups but reassured Californians that state laws remain unchanged. "We will not be frightened or cowed by the President’s threats," he declared.

The statement also provided resources for school officials regarding policies on transgender and gender nonconforming students, as well as information on inclusive curricula and health equity.

Individuals who believe their rights are being violated can file complaints with either the California Attorney General’s Office or the California Civil Rights Department.
