Attorney General Steve Marshall presented the 2024 Safe School Initiative Award to Elvin Hill Elementary School in Columbiana, Alabama. The award recognizes the school's implementation of safety plans and highlights current trends in school safety.
"Elvin Hill Elementary School exemplifies what it means to prioritize the safety and well-being of students," said Attorney General Marshall. "Their proactive approach, strong partnerships, and unwavering commitment to preparedness set a standard for schools across Alabama."
Marshall noted that Elvin Hill was selected as one of the winning schools in Alabama for 2024 due to its excellent school culture fostering safety, connection, and buy-in among faculty and students. "It is for these reasons that Elvin Hill was awarded the full 10 points," he added.
Principal Courtney Madison expressed gratitude for receiving the award: "This recognition is a testament to the incredible teamwork and dedication of everyone in our school community." She emphasized the importance of collaboration with local agencies like the Columbiana Police Department and Shelby County Student Services Department in maintaining a safe environment focused on teaching and learning.
Madison stated, "We are immensely grateful for our partnerships... As we strive to continue being a model for safe schools, the well-being and safety of our school community will remain our top priority."
The selection process involved an application review by independent judges with expertise in school safety trends. Applicants were evaluated on their ability to enhance protocols through preparation, training, collaboration with emergency response agencies, involvement of security personnel, innovation in technology, community participation, and education.
Six schools from Alabama received the Safe School Award: Orange Beach Middle & High School; UMS-Wright Preparatory School; Ladonia Elementary School; Russellville Elementary School; Cullman City Primary School; and Elvin Hill Elementary School. Attorney General Marshall will visit each institution to present their awards personally.
Additionally, eight other schools exceeded state requirements for student learning, mental health, and safety standards. These institutions received congratulatory letters and certificates from Attorney General Marshall.
