Attorney General Nick Brown of Washington, along with attorneys general from 12 other states, has issued a joint statement in response to President Trump's recent executive orders aimed at dismantling diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) policies. The statement was signed by the attorneys general of California, Illinois, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

The joint statement criticizes the executive orders as "unnecessary and disingenuous," arguing that they do not address discrimination but instead target lawful policies beneficial to all Americans. According to the statement: “President Trump’s executive orders are unnecessary and disingenuous. These orders have nothing to do with combatting discrimination."

The group emphasized that DEIA initiatives align with state and federal anti-discrimination laws and aim to create fairer workplaces. They expressed concern over President Trump's claims linking these initiatives to a recent plane crash as offensive: "His baseless and offensive claims that these initiatives somehow contributed to the tragic plane crash this week are an insult to those who are grieving."

The attorneys general reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing civil rights laws against discriminatory practices. They highlighted the role of DEIA programs in promoting respect and understanding across diverse backgrounds without compromising individual merit or lowering standards.

In conclusion, they stated: "We condemn discrimination in any form, and we stand in strong opposition to the President’s recent orders and the misleading narrative he has pushed to justify them.”

Washington's Attorney General's Office is noted for its broad legal responsibilities within the state including consumer protection and civil rights enforcement.
