Attorney General Peter F. Neronha, along with attorneys general from California, Illinois, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and Washington have issued a joint statement in response to President Trump's recent executive orders. These orders aim to dismantle diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) policies and programs.

The attorneys general stated: “President Trump’s executive orders are unnecessary and disingenuous. These orders have nothing to do with combatting discrimination. The Trump administration has longstanding civil rights laws at its disposal to combat real discrimination.” They expressed willingness to collaborate if the administration chose a different path but criticized the targeting of lawful policies that benefit all Americans.

The statement further emphasized that DEIA initiatives are consistent with state and federal anti-discrimination laws and foster environments for equal opportunities. It countered President Trump's claims linking these initiatives to a recent plane crash as baseless and offensive.

Representing millions of American workers collectively as state attorneys general, they strongly opposed what they described as an attempt by the President to weaponize long-standing policies supported across political lines. They argued these policies combat historical inequities faced by underrepresented communities.

“DEIA initiatives do more than prevent discrimination—they promote respect,” the statement continued. It highlighted the importance of inclusive employment practices such as expanded parental leave and flexible work arrangements which consider diverse needs.

Contrary to assertions made by President Trump about diminishing individual merit or lowering standards through DEIA initiatives, the attorneys general clarified that these ensure fair opportunities for everyone without engaging in race-and-sex-based preferences.

As chief law enforcement officers in their states committed to enforcing civil rights laws against discriminatory practices, they condemned any form of discrimination while opposing President Trump's recent orders and narrative surrounding them.
