Acting U.S. Attorney Tina L. Nommay announced that the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana collected a total of $5,219,650 in civil and criminal actions during Fiscal Year 2024. This amount includes $2,667,519 from criminal actions and $2,552,131 from civil actions.
The Northern District also collaborated with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Department of Justice components to collect an additional $1,925,938 in joint cases. Of this sum, $2,200 was collected in criminal actions while $1,923,738 came from civil actions. Notably, a civil case handled alongside the Environmental Enforcement Section resulted in recovering $1,018,433 through a settlement agreement in United States v. Cleveland-Cliffs Burns Harbor LLC.
U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and department litigating divisions enforce and collect debts owed to the United States and victims of federal crimes. Defendants are required by law to pay restitution to victims who have suffered physical injury or financial loss due to certain federal crimes. While restitution goes directly to victims, criminal fines and felony assessments contribute to the Crime Victims Fund which supports victim compensation and assistance programs at both federal and state levels.
Additionally, asset forfeiture efforts by the Northern District of Indiana yielded $855,895 in FY 2024. These forfeited assets are deposited into the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund for use in restoring funds to crime victims and supporting various law enforcement initiatives.
