Former postal worker pleads guilty to stealing mail contents

United States Attorney Duane A. Evans has announced that Sonia Miller, a 54-year-old resident of New Orleans, has pled guilty to theft of U.S. mail matter by a postal employee. The plea was entered on January 16, 2025, and involves charges under Title 18, United States Code, Section 1709(a).

Court documents reveal that on or about March 14, 2023, Miller unlawfully removed the contents from several parcels of mail entrusted to her in her capacity as a postal employee.

Miller's sentencing could result in a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment. Additionally, she faces up to a $250,000 fine and up to five years of supervised release. There is also a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.

The investigation into this case was conducted by the United States Postal Service's Office of the Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Mary Katherine Kaufman from the General Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution.
