Katrina LaFoe, a resident of Barton, Vermont, has been sentenced for misdemeanor false pretenses related to the submission of fraudulent timesheets for payments from Vermont Medicaid. The Attorney General’s Office revealed that the conviction followed an investigation by the Medicaid Fraud and Residential Abuse Unit (MFRAU) of the Vermont Attorney General’s Office and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General.

Ms. LaFoe pleaded guilty on January 23, 2025. Judge Rory Thibault presided over the case and sentenced her to two to four months in prison, which was suspended in favor of a three-year probation due to her prompt acceptance of responsibility. As part of her probation conditions, Ms. LaFoe is required to pay restitution amounting to $18,485 and is prohibited from taking any role involving the direction of Medicaid funds.

The public is encouraged to report suspected Medicaid fraud by contacting MFRAU through their online form.

The MFRAU receives significant funding from federal sources, with 75 percent coming from a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services totaling $1,332,724 for Federal fiscal year FY 2025. The remaining 25 percent is funded by the State of Vermont, amounting to $444,241 for FY 2025.
