Gilberto Contreras has admitted guilt to charges of possessing nearly 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr. commented on the case, stating, "Contreras distributed massive quantities of dangerous drugs that posed a significant threat to the health and safety of our communities." He expressed gratitude for the efforts of federal and local law enforcement in addressing drug distribution.
Jae Chung, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Atlanta Division, emphasized the agency's commitment by saying, "This case represents the continued commitment of the DEA to identify and hold accountable those who engage in the distribution of dangerous drugs, such as methamphetamine."
The investigation began on July 2, 2024, when DEA agents received information about a local trafficker selling large amounts of methamphetamine. The operation led them to a parking lot in Clayton County, Georgia where they encountered Contreras. Following a vehicle stop shortly after this encounter, agents found approximately 44 pounds of methamphetamine in a black trash bag. A subsequent search at Contreras's residence and backyard in Ellenwood, Georgia uncovered around 915 pounds more methamphetamine along with $40,000 cash.
Gilberto Contreras is set for sentencing on May 13, 2025 before U.S. District Judge Thomas W. Thrash Jr.
The Drug Enforcement Administration conducted this investigation with support from the Clayton County Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dwayne A. Brown Jr. is handling prosecution duties.
