California Attorney General Rob Bonta, along with Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho, Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester, and the United States Department of Homeland Security, has announced the formation of the Sacramento Regional Human Trafficking Task Force (SR HTTF). This task force is the third established by the California Department of Justice (DOJ) to combat human trafficking in the state. Similar teams operate in San Diego and Fresno.

The task forces have made significant progress statewide by working with law enforcement to dismantle human trafficking networks and protect children from exploitation. Their efforts have resulted in 707 arrests and support for nearly 800 victims.

Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized that "the objective of this task force is to use our shared intelligence to increase the total number of human trafficking investigations and prosecutions within the Sacramento area, to hold perpetrators accountable, and support survivors along the way." He stressed that a trauma-informed and culturally competent approach is crucial for handling these cases.

District Attorney Thien Ho highlighted that "as we recognize National Human Trafficking Awareness Month," this new task force aims "to protect children and young adults from human trafficking and sex exploitation in our community." The collaboration involves multiple agencies, including the California Attorney General’s Office, Sacramento Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations.

Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester stated that "the Sacramento Police Department stands unwavering in the fight against human trafficking—a crime that strips victims of their freedom, dignity, and humanity." She underscored the importance of partnerships in tackling this issue from all angles.

Tatum King, special agent in charge for HSI San Francisco, remarked on the strength of united law enforcement efforts: “When law enforcement agencies unite... it sends a strong message – we will uncover hidden truths."

The SR HTTF's mission is to enforce state and federal laws against all forms of human trafficking. The DOJ Victims’ Services Unit works alongside victim service providers across California to offer support services tailored to crime victims' needs.

For those seeking help or information about human trafficking resources, contact details are provided for both local services and national hotlines.
