Adrian McKinney, a 29-year-old resident of Columbus, Ohio, has been sentenced to 84 months in federal prison. The sentencing took place in U.S. District Court and pertains to charges of illegal firearm possession and narcotics offenses near a school.

The charges stem from a March 2024 incident when law enforcement executed a search warrant at McKinney's residence in the Wedgewood Village Apartment Complex. This complex is located within 1,000 feet of Wedgewood Middle School and consists of 700 units near several schools. The investigation was conducted by the Wedgewood Enforcement Team, established by the Columbus Division of Police in October 2023 to address high crime rates in the area.

During the search, officers discovered a loaded multi-caliber firearm along with fentanyl and cocaine. As a convicted felon, McKinney is barred from possessing firearms or ammunition. He has previous convictions for state narcotics crimes and was under court supervision at the time of these offenses.

In August 2024, McKinney pleaded guilty to charges including possession with intent to distribute cocaine near a school, illegal possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, and possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

The sentence was announced by Kenneth L. Parker, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio; Daryl S. McCormick, Special Agent in Charge at the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF); and Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant. Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer M. Rausch is representing the United States in this case.
