An Iowa City resident, Christopher Kevin Carpenter, 62, has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for receiving child pornography. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a CyberTip indicating that a social media account linked to Carpenter had received files containing child sexual abuse material.
Law enforcement conducted a search of Carpenter's residence in Coralville, seizing ten electronic and storage devices. A forensic examination revealed that Carpenter had received images and videos of child sexual abuse material dating back to 2001.
Upon completing his prison term, Carpenter will serve a five-year supervised release period. He was also ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution. There is no parole in the federal system.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentencing. The University of Iowa Department of Campus Safety investigated the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project involves collaboration between U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section to prosecute offenders and rescue victims.
