Savion Garcia, a 24-year-old inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) McDowell, has been sentenced to an additional year in prison for possessing weapons while incarcerated. This sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release.
The incident leading to this sentencing occurred on October 19, 2023, when a staff member at FCI McDowell conducted a random search of Garcia's cell. During the search, two handcrafted weapons, known as "shanks," were discovered on Garcia. One weapon was described as a six-inch-long flat metal bar with a cloth handle, and the other was a piece of metal approximately six and three-fourth inches long, sharpened to a point with a cloth-wrapped handle. Garcia admitted to owning these items and acknowledged their intended use as weapons.
United States Attorney Will Thompson announced the sentencing and praised the Federal Bureau of Prisons for their investigative efforts. The sentence was imposed by Senior United States District Judge David A. Faber. Assistant United States Attorney Timothy D. Boggess handled the prosecution.
