First Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr. has assumed the role of Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, following Ryan K. Buchanan's departure. The transition took effect on January 20, 2024, in accordance with the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.
Ryan K. Buchanan expressed confidence in Moultrie's capabilities: "Richard S. Moultrie, Jr. is an accomplished trial lawyer and a career prosecutor who lives the mission of the Department of Justice," he stated. Buchanan emphasized Moultrie's leadership skills and his commitment to upholding the law and protecting civil rights.
Moultrie shared his appreciation for working alongside Buchanan: “It has been an incredible privilege to work side-by-side with U.S. Attorney Buchanan as the District’s First Assistant U.S. Attorney,” he said. He pledged to continue the district's mission of prosecuting federal crimes and maintaining relationships with law enforcement partners and community stakeholders.
With extensive experience in handling complex federal court matters, Moultrie previously served as Chief of the Violent Crime & National Security Section within the office. He is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has received notable awards such as the U.S. Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award.
Moultrie's academic background includes a Juris Doctor from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Morehouse College.
