Attorney General Merrick Garland delivered remarks at the 72nd Annual Attorney General’s Awards Ceremony, recognizing the contributions of Justice Department employees and law enforcement partners. The ceremony highlighted the dedication of over 115,000 public servants who have worked to uphold the rule of law, protect civil rights, and ensure national security.
Garland acknowledged their efforts in collaboration with law enforcement and community partners across the nation. "They have worked with law enforcement and community partners across the country to drive down violent crime, seize deadly drugs, capture dangerous fugitives, and deter and disrupt threats to our national security," he stated.
The event honored individuals for their leadership and heroism that have positively impacted communities nationwide. Garland expressed gratitude for those whose work has made communities safer and improved the effectiveness of the Justice Department. He emphasized, "We honor public servants who advocated for victims; protected consumers; defended civil rights; disrupted threats and prevented tragedies; and who saved lives and changed lives."
A moment was dedicated to remembering Deputy U.S. Marshal Tommy Weeks, Task Force Officer Alden Elliot, Task Force Officer Samuel Poloche, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Joshua Eyer. These individuals lost their lives during a U.S. Marshals task force operation in North Carolina last year. "We are grateful to their families for allowing us to recognize their loved ones," Garland said.
He thanked all awardees for their courage and commitment to public service: "Thank you for your leadership. Thank you for your courage." Garland also expressed appreciation to family members supporting these public servants throughout their careers.
Concluding his speech, Garland reflected on his tenure working with the Department of Justice's staff over four years: "I am more grateful to you than I can express. I am so proud of you." He then returned the program to Deputy Attorney General Monaco.
