A man from El Salvador has been sentenced in a federal court for illegal reentry into the United States. Jose Humberto Diaz-Tobar, aged 41, pleaded guilty to the charge and received a sentence of time served, as announced by United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan.
The sentencing was carried out by United States District Judge Christy Criswell Wiegand. The case arose after an incident on February 1, 2024, when the Allegheny County Police Department encountered Diaz-Tobar following a traffic accident. It was determined that he was unlawfully present in the U.S., having previously been removed in October 2012. At that time, Diaz-Tobar admitted to crossing the Rio Grande River near Hidalgo, Texas without inspection by immigration officials.
Diaz-Tobar was detained by immigration authorities on July 24, 2024, and remained in federal custody for nearly six months before his sentencing.
Assistant United States Attorney Rebecca L. Silinski prosecuted the case for the government. U.S. Attorney Olshan praised U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations for their role in investigating and successfully prosecuting Diaz-Tobar.
