Vermonters filed 3,533 scam reports with the Attorney General’s Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) in 2024. The most reported scam was the "Computer Tech Support" scam, which accounted for nearly 30% of these reports. This scam involves deceptive alerts about supposed computer issues like expiring antivirus software or malware infections. Variations include fake messages about packages or unauthorized orders sent to consumers' phones or emails. This marks the fourth consecutive year that this particular scam has topped the list.
Another significant issue is the return of email extortion scams, which had been absent from the list for four years. These emails threaten to release compromising photos and information about recipients. A new aspect of this scam includes screen-captured images of recipients’ homes from online map services, used to intimidate victims into complying with scammers’ demands.
“Educating consumers is the best way to protect Vermonters from scams,” stated Attorney General Clark. “With most scams originating overseas, they are incredibly difficult to shut down. These are the top scams to look out for.”
Resources on preventing scams and other information can be accessed via CAP Connection blog, Attorney General Clark’s social media platforms, and by subscribing to VT Scam Alert System notifications through CAP’s website. Approximately 9,000 Vermonters have subscribed to receive these alerts.
“Vermonters have long relied on Vermont Alert to notify them of floods, hazardous travel, local boil water notices, and countless other issues that impact their lives,” said Vermont Emergency Management Director Eric Forand. “Scam alerts will add a layer of protection of Vermonters’ financial security for those who choose to receive them.” Attorney General Clark expressed gratitude towards Vermont Emergency Management for their collaboration.
In future updates, individuals signing up for VT-ALERT will have an option to receive scam notifications among other choices. Current users can also modify their preferences to include these alerts.
Attorney General Clark encourages Vermonters who encounter scams or fall victim to report them and seek assistance by contacting her Consumer Assistance Program at 800-649-2424 or AGO.CAP@vermont.gov.
