Casey Tuttle, a 26-year-old resident of Spencer, Iowa, was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison on January 7, 2025. Tuttle had pled guilty to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm on August 29, 2024, in Sioux City federal court.
Tuttle's previous convictions include burglary in the second degree in 2018 and burglary in the third degree alongside possession of methamphetamine for the third or subsequent offense in 2021. These felony convictions legally bar him from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The case against Tuttle arose when officers from the Spencer Police Department stopped him early on April 4, 2024. He was riding his bicycle without taillights or reflectors. After discovering outstanding arrest warrants, officers detained Tuttle and conducted a search. They found a .22 caliber revolver, ammunition, marijuana, knives, one gram of methamphetamine, and other drug paraphernalia in his backpack. Tuttle admitted to being a drug user at that time.
"Each of these are felony convictions which prohibit Tuttle from possessing a firearm or ammunition," stated officials involved with the case.
"As a drug user, Tuttle is also prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition," they further noted regarding his legal restrictions due to drug use.
