A Virginia man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for his involvement in a sextortion case involving a minor. U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger announced the sentencing of Raymond Jung Woo Choi, also known as Jason Lee, who will serve 192 months in prison followed by 20 years of supervised release.
Court documents reveal that between November 2023 and February 2024, Choi, aged 42 from Centreville, Virginia, used Instagram and other social media platforms to engage in sexually explicit conversations with a girl aged between 13 and 14. Under the alias "Jason Lee," he coerced the minor into sending him explicit images and videos through Instagram. Additionally, Choi groomed the victim by sending gifts via Amazon or directly through the U.S. Postal Service.
On February 17, 2024, Choi traveled from Virginia to Minnesota intending to meet the minor victim. However, due to intervention by family members and law enforcement officials, this meeting did not occur, and Choi returned to Virginia.
Choi pleaded guilty on October 2, 2024, to one count of production of child pornography. His sentence was handed down today by Judge Donovan W. Frank at the U.S. District Court.
The investigation was conducted by the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Postal Inspection Service as part of Project Safe Childhood. This initiative aims to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse across the nation since its launch in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew C. Murphy led the prosecution in this case.
