United States Attorney Damien M. Diggs has announced his resignation as the chief federal law enforcement officer for the Eastern District of Texas, effective January 21, 2025. Nominated by President Joseph R. Biden and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2023, Diggs has led an office with significant achievements in public safety and legal matters.

Diggs expressed gratitude to President Biden, Attorney General Garland, and Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz for their support during his tenure. "This office and our committed local, state, and federal law enforcement partners go above and beyond daily to keep our communities safe," he stated.

During his leadership, Diggs oversaw nearly 100 employees across six offices in Texas, focusing on public safety, fraud prevention, civil rights protection, and community outreach. His efforts resulted in notable successes against gun violence, drug trafficking, healthcare fraud, cybercrime, and human trafficking.

The district's initiatives under Diggs included Project Safe Neighborhoods expansion and Operation Purple Ribbon targeting domestic violence abusers. Additionally, Operation Texas Kill Switch addressed illegal machinegun conversion devices.

In combating large-scale drug trafficking organizations through the DOJ’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force program (OCDETF), Diggs' team achieved significant extraditions and prosecutions related to international drug cartels.

The Civil Division under Diggs negotiated major settlements with corporations like Walgreens and Medisca Inc., while also holding individuals accountable for defrauding the government.

Diggs prioritized civil rights investigations within Texas Juvenile Justice Department facilities and led community engagement efforts on fentanyl awareness alongside other Texas U.S. Attorneys.

As a member of various Attorney General Advisory Subcommittees on violent crime and other issues, Diggs contributed beyond his district responsibilities.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Abe McGlothin Jr. will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney following Diggs' departure until a successor is appointed by the President.
