An Albuquerque man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for a series of armed robberies committed in early 2022. The crimes took place after Xavior Akina, 28, absconded from a federal halfway house.

Court documents reveal that Akina's crime spree began on February 23, 2022, when he robbed a Chevron gas station in Los Lunas at gunpoint. During the robbery, he stole money, cigarettes, and an energy drink. Two days later, on February 25, Akina used a silver handgun to rob a Circle K in Los Lunas. On March 12, he escalated his actions by shooting and injuring the clerk during another robbery at a Circle K in Albuquerque. The following day, March 13, Akina targeted two more locations: a DK convenience store and Sally's Beauty Store in Albuquerque.

Before these incidents, Akina had escaped from a federal halfway house. His criminal history includes a previous conviction for the armed robbery of a pizza delivery person in 2018. For that offense, he was sentenced to seven years (84 months) in prison.

Upon completing his current sentence, Akina will be subject to three years of supervised release.

The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office. The FBI's Albuquerque Field Office led the investigation with help from the Albuquerque Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Samuel A. Hurtado prosecuted the case.

There is no parole available within the federal system.
