A Roanoke man appeared in federal court following his indictment on bank robbery charges. Michael Anthony McCoy, 67, faces one count of conspiracy to commit bank robbery, two counts of bank robbery, including the use of a dangerous weapon, and one count of brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. His arrest occurred last year in Newport News, Virginia.

Dawn Davis, another individual involved in the case, has already pleaded guilty to related charges. The indictment details that on October 26, 2022, McCoy instructed Davis to draft a threatening note for use in a bank robbery. McCoy then used this note at the Truist Bank on NW Melrose Avenue in Roanoke. He reportedly approached a second teller with a firearm during the incident.

The duo allegedly stole approximately $6,485 from this location and proceeded to rob another Truist Bank two days later, taking nearly $6,000.

Acting U.S. Attorney Zachary T. Lee announced the charges alongside Stanley M. Meador from the FBI’s Richmond Division and Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares. The FBI is leading the investigation into these incidents.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Scheff and Special Assistant United States Attorney John Beamer are handling prosecution duties for this case.

Authorities remind that an indictment is an allegation and all defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in court.
