A Georgetown man, Kevin Shorter, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of Paul McCarter. The sentencing took place on December 13 and follows Shorter's conviction for Murder 2nd Degree and Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony. This sentence results from a Guilty But Mentally Ill (GBMI) plea agreement.
Attorney General Kathy Jennings expressed gratitude towards the prosecutors and Delaware State Police involved in the case. "Justice has been served; but I also know that closure is more elusive than justice. Our hearts are with the victim’s loved ones at this difficult time," she stated.
The incident occurred on September 7, 2022, when Shorter attacked McCarter with a metal baseball bat at Royal Farms on Dupont Boulevard in Georgetown. Both men were part of the local homeless community, and Shorter reportedly believed McCarter was a threat due to his mental illness. McCarter later died from his injuries after being transferred from Nanticoke Memorial Hospital to Christiana Hospital.
