As the holiday season comes to a close, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is reminding residents about the process for filing consumer complaints. Consumers can submit their grievances to the Department of Attorney General through online platforms, fax, or mail.
"Each year, our Consumer Protection Team helps Michigan consumers by mediating complaints that fall within our jurisdiction," stated Nessel. "I encourage anyone who believes they have been a victim of fraud or deceptive business practices to reach out and file a complaint."
Upon submission of an online complaint, individuals will receive a confirmation screen displaying their assigned Attorney General file number. Due to the high volume of complaints received by the Consumer Protection Team, processing may take several weeks.
Consumers are advised to consider several points before filing a complaint:
- Complaints and supporting documents become public records once submitted and may be disclosed under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act.
- Complaints might be forwarded to the concerned business or other governmental agencies for review.
- Some complaints could lead to civil or criminal cases and may be revealed during court proceedings.
- Submitted information will not be sold, rented, or leased.
- Copies should be made of all documents submitted as originals will not be returned.
- Sensitive personal information should only be sent if necessary for investigation purposes and preferably via mail with proper identification details. Email is discouraged for sending sensitive data.
- Not all consumer issues fall under the jurisdiction of the Attorney General; other state and federal agencies might assist in certain cases. The Complaint Directory can help identify appropriate agencies.
