Antoine Lashawn Smith, a 43-year-old resident of Oklahoma City, has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison for illegal possession of ammunition following a prior felony conviction. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester.

Smith was charged on August 7, 2024, by a federal Grand Jury with being a felon in possession of ammunition. This charge stemmed from an incident on February 13, 2024, when Oklahoma City Police responded to a domestic assault report at a local apartment complex. According to the victim's account, Smith engaged in a verbal altercation and subsequently assaulted her with a broom in the parking lot. After the incident, Smith returned to his apartment but was apprehended by law enforcement the following morning. A search warrant led officers to discover live ammunition in his residence.

Smith entered a guilty plea on September 11, 2024, acknowledging his unlawful possession of ammunition despite his criminal background.

U.S. District Judge David L. Russell sentenced Smith on November 20, 2024, to serve 96 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. The court cited Smith's ongoing threat to society and his history of violent behavior as factors influencing the sentence.

Public records indicate that Smith has an extensive criminal record in Oklahoma County District Court with various charges including drug-related offenses and illegal firearm possession.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives alongside the Oklahoma City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary E. Walters prosecuted the case.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at reducing violent crime through strategic crime-reduction efforts since its inception in 2001. Additionally, this case falls under "Operation 922," which focuses on prosecuting federal crimes linked to domestic violence within the Western District of Oklahoma.

Further details can be found in public filings related to this case.
