A Fayetteville man, Terry A. Frederick, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon following an attempted carjacking incident in Harnett County. Frederick pleaded guilty to the charge on May 9, 2024.
Court documents reveal that on January 31, 2023, Frederick was seen near Hodges Chapel Road and I-95 in Harnett County. Witnesses reported him shouting threats and firing a handgun. He then attempted to pull a man from his pickup truck but was unsuccessful as the driver managed to drive away. Frederick fired at least one shot at the vehicle.
When police moved to arrest him, Frederick resisted but was eventually detained. Officers found a partially loaded, stolen .40 caliber pistol in his jacket pocket. Frederick has prior felony convictions related to drug and property crimes.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The program focuses on fostering trust, supporting community-based violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
Michael F. Easley Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced the sentencing by U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with local law enforcement agencies investigated the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah E. Nokes prosecuted the case.
