As the holiday season comes to a close, many consumers are preparing to return gifts and other merchandise. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has reissued her consumer alert on "Avoiding Unhappy Returns" to assist shoppers in navigating store return policies.
"Return policies vary greatly from store to store, but almost all impose a time limit on returns," said Nessel. "If you know you will return an item you received this holiday season, don't wait, and review the store’s return policy before making the trip."
To prevent issues with returns, it is advised that consumers familiarize themselves with a store's return policy prior to making purchases. Return policies can typically be found posted at cash registers or customer service areas, and customers can also inquire directly with store clerks.
For online shopping, consumers should check the website for information regarding returns. If details are not available online, caution is advised before proceeding with purchases. It is recommended to contact the store for written confirmation of their return policy and keep all related documentation such as receipts and packing slips.
In cases where a return is denied by a clerk, speaking with a manager may resolve the issue. Complaints can be made if items are defective or not as described, or if stores fail to honor their stated policies. Credit card users may consider disputing charges if necessary.
