The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is examining an officer-involved death in Chippewa County, Wisconsin. The incident took place on the evening of December 21, 2024, in the Town of Lafayette.
Around 11:31 p.m., deputies from the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic abuse report. Upon their arrival, they found that the suspect had already left the scene by vehicle. Deputies later located the vehicle and attempted to stop it as part of their investigation. However, the suspect fled and subsequently crashed near County Highway K and 50th Avenue.
After crashing, the suspect fired at law enforcement officers, hitting at least one squad car from the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office. The Eau Claire Regional SWAT Team was called for assistance. Upon their arrival, gunfire continued from the suspect, striking an armored vehicle. Two operators from the SWAT team discharged their weapons in response.
Emergency medical services were contacted and life-saving measures were attempted by law enforcement officers; however, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Per agency policy, involved officers will be placed on administrative leave during this period.
The DCI is leading this investigation with assistance from a DCI Crime Response Specialist, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office. All involved law enforcement agencies are cooperating fully with DCI.
The DCI continues to review evidence and gather facts related to this incident. Once completed, investigative reports will be forwarded to the Chippewa County District Attorney’s office for further action.
