U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans | U.S. Department of Justice

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans has announced the sentencing of Frederic Thompson, 24, from New Orleans. Thompson previously pleaded guilty to charges related to conspiring to steal mail and possession of stolen mail. The violations are under Title 18, United States Code, Sections 371 and 1708.

The indictment states that on January 30, 2022, Thompson collaborated with others to steal mail from two locations: the Lakeview Post Office in Orleans Parish and USPS mailboxes on Metairie Road in Jefferson Parish. One accomplice drove while another used a stolen USPS key to access mail from these sites. Thompson was in the backseat of the vehicle during this operation. After a police pursuit, authorities discovered approximately 30 pieces of stolen mail with the group.

U.S. District Court Judge Jay C. Zainey sentenced Thompson to three years probation along with a $200 mandatory special assessment fee.

U.S. Attorney Evans commended the efforts of the United States Postal Inspection Service, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, and New Orleans Police Department for their work in this investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jon Maestri from the General Crimes Unit led the prosecution.
