A Raleigh man has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison following a shooting incident in March 2023. Robert Terrance Green, III, pleaded guilty on September 4, 2024, to charges of possessing a firearm and ammunition as a felon.

"Robert Terrance Green III is a dangerous felon who has demonstrated a reckless disregard for the lives and property of others. I am grateful that justice has been served to prevent him from further harming our community," stated Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson. She emphasized the collaboration with federal partners like the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) in removing violent actors from the community.

Court documents revealed that Green, aged 43 at the time of his sentencing, possessed a firearm despite being a convicted felon when he shot another man at an apartment complex in Raleigh on March 21, 2023. The Raleigh Police Department responded promptly to the scene where witnesses reported that Green had driven into the complex's entrance and engaged in a verbal altercation with the victim before firing multiple rounds. The victim sustained two gunshot wounds to his left leg and was taken to WakeMed Hospital.

On March 27, 2023, officers stopped Green's vehicle during which they found the firearm used in the shooting. After his arrest, Green confessed to shooting the victim.

Green's criminal history includes previous felony convictions such as assault with intent to cause physical injury using a weapon or instrument, unlawful possession of a handgun, and making threats of violence.

The conviction was part of the Violent Crime Action Plan (VCAP), an initiative involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies aimed at addressing significant drivers of violent crime through strategic enforcement and intelligence-led policing.

Michael F. Easley Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced this development after U.S. District Judge Terrence W. Boyle handed down Green's sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jaren E. Kelly prosecuted the case with investigations conducted by ATF and Raleigh Police Department.
