A man from Chicago, Illinois, has been sentenced to more than two years in federal prison for assaulting a pregnant teenager with a firearm. Diago Davis, 51, was sentenced after pleading guilty on July 15, 2024, to one count of possession of a firearm as a felon.
The incident occurred on February 3, 2024. Law enforcement officers discovered that Davis had assaulted the teenager with a loaded firearm at his residence in Hiawatha, Iowa. The assault happened because Davis mistakenly believed the victim had taken his PlayStation 5. Davis has prior felony convictions related to drugs.
United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Davis in Cedar Rapids to 27 months in prison. Following his imprisonment, he will serve a three-year term of supervised release. There is no parole available in the federal system. Until his transfer to a federal prison is arranged, Davis remains in the custody of the United States Marshal.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering cooperation between law enforcement and communities. The Department launched an enhanced strategy for PSN on May 26, 2021, focusing on building community trust and legitimacy while supporting organizations that work to prevent violence.
Assistant United States Attorney Devra T. Hake prosecuted the case following an investigation by the Hiawatha Police Department.
