Tremayne Ferguson, a 24-year-old from West Haven, was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for his involvement in a firearm trafficking offense. U.S. District Judge Omar A. Williams delivered the sentence in Hartford, followed by three years of supervised release.
The case traces back to an incident on July 26, 2023, when Stefan Bagley Jr. was shot and wounded while driving in Bridgeport. On the same day, Bagley's vehicle was linked to another shooting incident in the area. Investigations uncovered that between October 2022 and October 2023, Bagley had purchased over 20 handguns from licensed dealers and trafficked them to various customers after removing their serial numbers.
Text messages seized during the investigation revealed Ferguson's role in transporting firearms from Bagley to other individuals and requesting Bagley purchase guns on his behalf. At the time of the offense, Ferguson was on state probation.
Ferguson was arrested on December 18, 2023, and pleaded guilty to firearm trafficking conspiracy on September 9, 2024. He remains out on a $75,000 bond but must report to prison by February 17.
Bagley also pleaded guilty to similar charges and is awaiting sentencing; most firearms involved remain unaccounted for.
U.S. Attorney Vanessa Roberts Avery highlighted that this case utilizes new criminal provisions under the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act signed into law in June 2022 targeting illegal firearm trafficking and straw-purchasing.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Bridgeport Police Department, and Connecticut State Police are investigating this matter with prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Gresham.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing gun violence through community trust-building efforts and strategic enforcement priorities launched by the Justice Department in May 2021.
