Aaron Herndon, 39, from Suitland, Maryland, has pleaded guilty to robbing an 87-year-old man in Northwest Washington D.C. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
The incident occurred on May 5, 2024. According to the evidence presented by the government, at around 1:00 p.m., the elderly victim was purchasing gift cards at a McDonald's located at 4100 Wisconsin Avenue NW. Surveillance footage captured Herndon approaching the victim from behind as he exited the restroom and taking his wallet from his jacket pocket. Several witnesses reported seeing Herndon flee on foot after committing the robbery.
Herndon was apprehended later that day by law enforcement officers who noted he was wearing the same clothing as during the robbery.
The Honorable Judge Jason Park has scheduled Herndon's sentencing for February 18, 2025.
This case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Negar Kordestani and Trisha Jhunjhnuwala involved in its preparation. The prosecution is being led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Hannah Skopicki.
