New York Attorney General Letitia James announced the successful collection of 111 firearms at a recent gun buyback event in Bohemia. The event was a collaborative effort involving the Office of the Attorney General, New York State Police, and Suffolk County Sheriff's Office. This initiative is part of Attorney General James' ongoing campaign to reduce gun violence across New York.
"Gun buyback events empower local community members to be a part of the solution against gun violence and turn in unwanted firearms with no questions asked," stated Attorney General James. She emphasized that each firearm collected contributes to enhancing safety in communities across the state. Since taking office in 2019, her efforts have resulted in over 8,400 guns being removed from circulation.
The Bohemia event saw the surrendering of various types of firearms: 11 assault weapons, 51 handguns, and 39 long guns were among those turned in. This initiative reflects a broader strategy aimed at curbing gun-related incidents.
Senator Monica Martinez expressed her support for these efforts by stating, "Reducing gun violence starts by removing firearms from our streets." She acknowledged the potential lifesaving impact of such events and praised those involved for their commitment to public safety.
Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos highlighted his firsthand experience with gun violence as a former police detective and underscored the importance of initiatives like the Gun Buyback program. He commended Attorney General James for her dedication to creating safer neighborhoods.
Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr., also recognized the value of buyback programs in reducing illegal and unwanted firearms on the streets. He thanked all partners involved for their efforts towards ensuring community safety.
