Roger Wayne Legg, a 33-year-old resident of Charleston, West Virginia, has been sentenced to five years in prison for carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. This will be followed by an additional five years of supervised release.

Court documents reveal that on September 20, 2023, Legg was found with approximately 694 grams of methamphetamine and a loaded Diamondback DB380 .380-caliber pistol in his backpack while in Charleston. He admitted to intending to distribute the methamphetamine and possessing the firearm for security purposes during drug sales.

The announcement was made by United States Attorney Will Thompson, who praised the investigative efforts of the Charleston Police Department-Special Enforcement Unit and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver Jr. handed down the sentence. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Alexander A. Redmon.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a strategy to strengthen PSN by fostering trust within communities, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
