Jean Volvick Moise has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for orchestrating a scheme that defrauded the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by filing false income tax returns. The sentencing took place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Court records, including the factual proffer supporting Moise's guilty plea, reveal that Moise, aged 39 and from Fort Lauderdale, prepared fraudulent tax returns for his clients. This resulted in his clients receiving larger refunds than they were entitled to. Moise achieved this by including false dependents, fabricated Form 1099 withholdings, fake educational credits, and fictitious Schedules C business expenses on the tax returns. These often pertained to non-existent businesses. His service fee was higher than the typical charge of a tax preparer. In total, Moise filed hundreds of false returns leading to the IRS issuing over $574,000 in fraudulent refunds.
The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida and Acting Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Hipkins of the IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS CI), Miami Field Office.
The IRS CI conducted the investigation into this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bertha R. Mitrani prosecuted it.
