Attorney General Peter F. Neronha has announced the hiring of 14 new legal professionals within the Office of the Attorney General. The office is also accepting applications for the 2025 Clifton Clerkship Program, with details available on its website.

"Our Office is made up of attorneys and professional staff with a wide range of expertise, powered by their drive to serve the people of Rhode Island," said Attorney General Neronha. "This year, we hired graduates from schools like Harvard Law, BC Law, UConn School of Law, and Roger Williams University School of Law, and we welcomed back two talented former Special Assistant Attorneys General. All of our exceptional team members, regardless of whether they are recent graduates or seasoned veterans, are united in their relentless pursuit of justice. This, coupled with their diverse experiences, makes our Office and our State stronger than ever."

The Clifton Clerkship Program is now open for applications until January 5, 2024. Named after Judge William C. Clifton Sr., the first African American Special Assistant Attorney General in the office's history, this program offers first- and second-year law students from historically underrepresented populations a chance to work on substantive legal matters over the summer while gaining valuable career experience.

Since its inception in 2020, fifteen law students have participated in this program. Graduates have gone on to join various attorney general offices and respected law firms.

The program targets qualified applicants from diverse backgrounds and those with disabilities who have been underrepresented in such roles. It encourages applications from students who have faced social or economic disadvantages or unique personal circumstances.

Participants will engage in a full-time program lasting ten weeks, dividing their time between criminal and civil divisions while receiving assignments tailored to their interests. Each student will be paired with a mentor and participate in educational events to build connections within the legal community.

To ensure financial barriers do not hinder participation, selected students will receive a stipend of approximately $4,000 for their summer clerkship.
